I had to secure some new photography gear for my trip to Africa. My Nikon D1, which I took with me to South Africa in 2001, simply wouldn’t cut it this time around (My phone has a better sensor). A year or so ago we bought an African safari at an auction. Then we decided that a week was too short a time to take considering the flight time to get to southern Africa, so we enlisted the help of “Mama Africa” at Mills Tourism Consulting and added a couple more safaris to the list. We started in South Africa in the KwaZulu Natal region at a private game park called Zulu Nyala. After spending a week there we flew north to Botswana and stayed three days in the Kalahari desert at Kalahari Plains Camp. Finally, one more plain ride brought us to the Okavango Delta for a four night stay at Duba Plains Camp. More...

On our way back from South Africa we had a long layover in New York, so we took it as an opportunity to visit Ground Zero. I forgot about these pictures for a while and never published them, but I just rediscovered them on my hard drive.

Who Needs Turkey?
We certainly don’t, so we packed up and headed for Africa over Thanksgiving. South Africa, that is. Zimbabwe and Zambia too. Why? Why not? Our fine friend Russ has two doting parents who live in Johannesburg, and when they offered to help us set up a vacation to Africa, we couldn’t resist. What kind of preparation does it take to find your self in Cape Town in November? Well, it turns out that it takes quite a few shots (twelve in all), and a very tough bum, as the flight is some fifteen hours long. You also get to take malaria medication all the time you are there, which has, and does, cause vivid dreams and occasional hallucinations. Still up for it? Then pop some pills and stick a few needles in your arms and let’s get going!
